Squadron contractor requirements

The Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron at Outer Harbor has run its marina, hardstand and slipway for a long time, and it expects contractors to meet its standards before they work on members’ vessels. That means induction, current contractor documentation and a professional approach to the site. Our documentation is lodged with the Squadron office and kept current, so an owner never needs to arrange access on our behalf.

We also keep to the Squadron’s hours and its rules on noise and conduct on the site, and when a job involves the hardstand we liaise with the yard rather than with the owner alone.

Hardstand and slipway

RSAYS has one of the better-equipped hardstands in Adelaide. A vessel out of the water gives easy access to the hull sides and transom, so if a boat is coming out for antifouling, a detail fits naturally into the same window. The yard’s schedule sets the pace and we work within it.

Pen-side work in the marina covers the rest: a Maintenance Wash on a regular schedule, an Exterior Detail, or a Full Detail inside and out, all without the vessel moving.

Conditions at Outer Harbor

Outer Harbor sits where the Port River meets Gulf St Vincent, and the marina takes the full weight of the westerly weather. The water is highly saline, the summer sun is unrelenting, and the working port next door adds fallout that settles on decks and topsides as fine dark grit. Left unwashed, that grit stains white surfaces and works into the non-skid.

Vessels kept here need a regular routine, not just an annual detail. A scheduled Maintenance Wash keeps the salt and grit from building up, and an Exterior Detail resets a boat that has gone a while between cleans.
