Port Lincoln is a long way from Adelaide by road and a different world on the water. Boston Bay is a large natural harbour on the eastern side of the Eyre Peninsula, home to the largest commercial fishing fleet in the Southern Hemisphere and, alongside it, a growing number of private motor yachts, game boats and cruising yachts. We travel to Port Lincoln for multi-vessel bookings arranged in advance, so that a trip covers several boats at Lincoln Cove Marina or at the Port Lincoln Yacht Club over a few days.

Our work is on private vessels. The tuna, prawn, mussel and lobster boats that line the docks are part of the character of the place, not part of our schedule. We book through the marina and keep our contractor documentation available.

Lincoln Cove Marina

Lincoln Cove Marina sits on the eastern side of Boston Bay, about five kilometres from the centre of town, with 110 berths for vessels from 8 to 18 metres. Water and electricity are available at the berth and there is a slipway for haul-outs. Berths are let by the day, week or month and a limited number are sold, which means the marina carries a mix of resident boats and visiting cruisers.

Pen-side work suits almost everything we do here, from a Maintenance Wash to a Full Detail inside and out, with everything the job needs brought down the pontoon. If a boat is already out on the slipway, we can detail it there. The Port Lincoln Pool beside the marina provides showers and bathrooms for a fee, which visiting owners appreciate.

Conditions in Boston Bay

Boston Bay is sheltered compared with the open gulf coast, and the water inside it is calmer than at North Haven or Glenelg. What the bay shares with the rest of the state is the sun. Summer UV on the Eyre Peninsula is as strong as anywhere in South Australia, and it works on exterior vinyl and surfaces whether the boat is used or not. The fishing fleet adds its own fallout to decks and topsides in the busier parts of the harbour.

Because our visits are spaced out, a boat here benefits from a thorough detail on each trip. An Exterior Detail or Full Detail resets it, and Protect & Shine adds UV protection to exterior surfaces and vinyl that carries through to the next visit.
