Working at Glenelg

Glenelg is Adelaide’s city beach, and its two marinas sit in the middle of it. Holdfast Shores Marina lies on the seaward side of the Glenelg weir and lock, wrapped by the restaurants and apartments of the Marina Pier precinct. Holdfast Quays Marina, known locally as the Patawalonga Boat Haven, sits behind the lock on the river side. Both are busy, public and close to their neighbours, and a contractor is expected to work quietly and tidily.

We bring everything we need down the pontoon and keep our work to the vessel we are on, so the boat alongside is never affected. Our contractor documentation is available to marina management before a job begins.

Holdfast Shores and Holdfast Quays

Holdfast Shores Marina is a freehold marina of 59 berths for vessels of 12 to 30 metres, with power and water at the berth and fuel on site. Many of the larger motor yachts on the metropolitan coast live here, and they stay in the water year round. Pen-side work suits them: a Maintenance Wash, an Exterior Detail or a Full Detail all happen without the vessel moving.

Holdfast Quays is reached through the remote-controlled lock and accommodates boats up to about 14 metres in a well-protected basin. Trailer boats, sports cruisers and yachts kept here get the same pen-side service. Neither marina has a working hardstand or slipway of its own, so if a job is better done out of the water we fit our days around a lift-out arranged through a nearby yard.

Conditions on the city beach

Glenelg faces due west onto Gulf St Vincent with no shelter from the afternoon sun or the sea breeze. Salt dries on every surface, and the fine sand that blows through the precinct settles on decks and in the non-skid as grit. Vessels here look tired sooner than their owners expect.

A regular Maintenance Wash is the simplest answer on this stretch of coast, because salt and sand come off easily when they are not left to build up. For a boat that has gone a while between cleans, an Exterior Detail resets it first.
